Episode - Choose Your Story is a free game, with over 50 million downloads and 5 million weekly users. This is a collection of stories (visual novels) written by the developers and players.
Stories about Dating
Most stories have references to dating or romance or just based on relationships between people. Stories often include sensitive themes, such as an obsession with looks, underage drinking, plenty of stereotypes, and rampant materialism. To create and advance yours or someone else's story, you will need coins, so you're often encouraged to buy them. If you don't, you'll only get to play two episodes every 4 hours.
If you want to create a story, you need to sign up through a Google account. You can also use your account to chat on a forum and share pictures from your story. The developers don't collect much of your personal information.
The tools used by the developers are almost identical to those that players can use. The game doesn't use the scripting language, opting for drag and drop mechanics instead. As developers explain, it's easy to learn all tools but hard to master the game. As a whole, though, getting characters interacting with each other is easy. Besides, every new update makes the process even more streamlined.
Some players just make stories they share with friends. However, there is a lot of money to be made through the game. Authors are motivated by a desire for feedback. One person, for example, has been able to quite the job, with her income coming solely from stories she writes for the game. Achieving fame is a big appeal for some.
Successful stories on Episode make a lot of money. Some people have paid their way through schools through their stores. So far, there have been 7 billion stories, which is about 97,000 years of viewing time.
Of course, the game has some drawbacks. The main ones include limited options for names, not being able to design your character's appearance, and the wait time. If you don't want to pay, you will have to wait for quite some time until you can continue reading.
Episode - Choose Your Story is a creative place for storytelling. However, it's full of superficial and stereotypical content. It gets high marks for the main content and easy-to-learn development tools. Everyone can create a compelling story with a complex dialog system. That said, it could be better if the focus wasn't on soap-opera-like novels and trashy dating experiences.
